The Department of Biology at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) was founded in 1989 by the decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 12/DIKTI/Kep/1989, dated February 17, 1989. Over the years, the department has steadily grown and adapted to the evolving landscape of higher education in Indonesia. Currently, the department boasts two programs: the Bachelor of Biology Program (PSBIO) and the Master of Biology Program (MBIO). PSBIO has earned “Unggul” (Excellent) accreditation under the BAN-PT decree No. 9889/SK/BAN-PT/Ak.KP/S/1/2023.

To establish a center of excellence in biology, with an emphasis on tropical biodiversity in Indonesia, and to cultivate globally-minded socio-biopreneurs who are innovative and independent.

  1. To provide education, conduct research, and engage in community service focused on the management, development, and utilization of biological resources, producing graduates who can compete in the digital and global era.
  2. To produce graduates who are excellent, independent, diligent, creative, innovative, entrepreneurial (biopreneurial), and possess integrity in applying biological sciences for the benefit of society, the nation, and the country.
  3. To expand and equalize access to learning, research, and biological services both within and outside of USK, supported by accountable and transparent laboratory governance and institutional systems.
  4. To enhance regional, national, and international collaborations in the study and application of biological sciences with a focus on biodiversity for the well-being of global society.

  2. To develop the ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems scientifically.
