Banda Aceh is known as an ancient city closely linked to the glorious history of the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom. During the sultanate era, Banda Aceh was known as Bandar Aceh Darussalam. The city was founded by Sultan Johan Syah on Friday, 1st Ramadan 601 AH (April 22, 1205 AD). Today, Banda Aceh is 813 years old and is one of the oldest Islamic cities in Southeast Asia. Banda Aceh also played a significant role in the spread of Islam throughout the Archipelago/Indonesia. Therefore, the city is also known as the “Veranda of Mecca.”
